Mealtime Enrichment Basics

Every day at MCR, our dogs play with their food. It’s true. Meals are games — and we highly encourage the fun and the mess.

Now that many members of our community are spending more time at home with their dogs, we figured we’d share some of our Mealtime Enrichment ideas to help you turn breakfast and dinner into fun (and tiring) activities for your dog.

We’re starting with simple ideas: use supplies you have on hand, spend a couple of minutes preparing the meal, and then sit back as your dog gets to work. We promise that he’ll be entertained, as these activities are a great way to engage dogs’ noses and brains.

  • Slow Feeders: These products are fantastic! They encourage your dog to slow down and to think. Add your dog’s usual meal and serve.
  • Towels: Don’t have a slow feeder? No problem! Grab a towel, add your dog’s food, fold/roll it up, and let him unwrap his very own burrito.
  • Scatter: We’re all for minimalism. Scatter your dog’s dinner around your yard, then let him find it. You can make this as easy or challenging as you like — but we recommend only feeding one dog at a time with this method.

You may need to play around with ideas to figure out what’s most appealing to your pup. But don’t worry: we’ve got you covered. Stay tuned for other, more advanced, mealtime enrichment activities on our blog.
